Season in Review

2022 really was a terrific summer in many respects, many members suggested to me the course conditions were the best in memory.

Our Department Managers, Chad, Sandy, Trish, Michelle and Carl worked tirelessly and I’m grateful for their efforts and dedication. We had a terrific group of seasonal employees and a particularly strong group in food and beverage. For those that may have missed the announcement, I just wanted to take the opportunity to remind you all that the indoor simulator opened on November 14th. Members can book a 1-hour session just as they would a tee time in season. You can use the website, mobile app or simply phone the pro shop. The tee sheet will open one week in advance starting at 6:00pm. Please note that we will no longer book space for the practice mats. The WELLPUTT training mats will be available on a first come, first serve basis within the hours of operation. The hours for the indoor space will be as follows:
Monday 10:00am - 5:00pm
Tuesday 10:00am - 5:00pm
Wednesday 10:00am - 5:00pm
Thursday 10:00am - 7:00pm
Friday 10:00am - 5:00pm
Sunday 10:00am - 4:00pm

Hello Everyone, 
Over the past two years I’ve gotten to know more of you as your Ladies Captain. It’s been fun to be involved behind the scenes and work with our Mad River team. I learned a lot and have an even greater appreciation for how lucky we are to have such a special group who work together to make Mad River the place that it is. We have an amazing golf course (#38 in Canada) at our doorstep filled with great friends.

Once a captain always a captain at heart. I will continue to be a proud ambassador for Mad River. It has been an honour to represent you. I leave you in good hands with Karen Franklin as your incoming Ladies Captain. Good Luck Karen!

Remember Ladies, next year is the year we switch up partners for Match Play. If you haven’t already, think about organizing your partner early. Don’t be left without one!

Words of Dr. Seuss come to mind, “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”

Hello fellow golfers!

I hope you were able to take advantage of the beautiful weather in early November and golfed at a few other clubs after the Mad closed.  Imagine golfing into November in double digit temperatures!

It was a wonderful golf season and on behalf of all of us, I’d like to thank our captain Susan Quigley for all her hard work over the past two years.  She did an amazing job as captain and her efforts were well-appreciated.

I look forward to taking on the position of Ladies Captain and would like to formally introduce you to our new assistant captain:  Patti-Ann Irwin-Allen! PA and I look forward to working together to meet the needs of our lady golfers at Mad River.  Please feel free to contact us if you have questions or concerns.

Our members have shared with me the various plans that they have for the off season.  Whatever winter plans you have, please stay safe and healthy.  See you in the spring!

Why More Tees?
 
I often get asked this question and the short answer is - more choice. The more accurate response requires a deeper dive.
 
Background
 
Think about golf course tee options 30 years ago, today and what it might be 30 years from now. In the past, tee options were usually limited to three alternatives, blue, white or red and they were usually designated as men’s or women’s tees.  Many changes have occurred over the years and analytics are now used to determine ideal course lengths and gender shouldn’t be the determining factor for which tee decks you decide to play. The primary data used to determine the most suitable tee for you to play from is player swing speed, which translates into what distance players hit the ball.
 
It’s really become irrelevant what your gender is when considering what tee to play from, it’s about what distance you hit the ball.

This is a special, by invitation only event that recognizes the Champions and Club Event Winners.  It was a delightful evening of camaraderie and a lively exchange of ideas for next season. 

The winners in attendance dined on a delicious meal prepared by Chef Malcolm and staff.  Michelle served a choice of shrimp paella or beef bourguignon that all enjoyed.

Men’s Mad League
 
Update: After meeting with past Captains of Mad River, some feedback has been received. Part of the advice makes sense and some would create administrative challenges. One major piece of the input deals with the appetite for the Men to have a more exclusive Wednesday Men’s day. This would include having a dedicated shot gun start EVERY Wednesday. For this to happen, we will need to clear the tee sheet a little earlier on Wednesday mornings for the shot gun to run smoothly. Our Lady’s section do this on Tuesday mornings and they have a wonderful patio time afterwards.  The challenge we had this year was that the lead group would run into slower play, which in turn created a bottleneck effect for all the other groups that were behind.

Personally, to reiterate, my vision would be to have live scoring on the screens while enjoying a beverage and bite.

We will also endeavour to choose Captains and have them attend a draft day to make up the teams.

We will be re-visiting the skins portion of the Wednesday event as well.

With just over two weeks to go until the end of our season, I wanted to take this opportunity to remind all members to pick up their golf bag and electric caddy (if applicable) from our club storage area. We would appreciate if all items can be picked up by November 4th. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all members who took time to complete the Back Shop Survey last month. I have read the comments which will provide some great insight into planning for 2023. Overall, it was nice to get the feedback and hear from the members that they felt service has improved compared to last year. Personally, I felt the staff took a step forward this season with still lots of room to improve moving forward.

Golf Course Update October 2022


Overview
Its hard to believe that it is mid-October already, this time of year is more important than ever to take care of your golf course.  Any divots and ball marks that are left unrepaired give poa an opportunity to invade.  Please replace divots if at all possible, rather than fill with sand and seed, unless your divot explodes and cannot be replaced.  And always fix your ball marks on greens, even when you hit the green and roll off the back or the side.

We have now started to prepare your golf course for one of the most stressful times of the year, winter.  All of our fine turf areas will be or have been top dressed prior to winter to help protect the crown of the plant.  This helps to protect the plant from wind, ice and just plain cold temperatures.  Topdressing will continue through the rest of the fall season.

I am currently a third-year student at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. I am studying aerospace engineering with a specialization in space systems and structures.

 The pursuit to be the best I can be and always improving myself is a theme that has always been constant in my life, which has been solidified through the game of golf. The sport has taught me that to be successful you have to deal with the bad lies, the ups and downs, and to control your emotions. Most importantly it has taught me that hard work pays off.

Thank you again for the amazing opportunity to be a part of the Mad River team as well as the opportunity for the Tom Sandell Award.

I am extremely honored and humbled to have been selected as this year's recipient of the Roy Emerton Education Incentive Award bursary.

I am very grateful to the membership at Mad River for providing the resources and support making the Roy Emerton Education Incentive Award possible.

The club has provided me with many different learning experiences throughout the past seasons, and helped me grow.

This bursary will most definitely help in furthering my education in Turfgrass Management.

The fall is bittersweet. Beautiful colours all around but it is also signs of our golf season coming to an end. Over the last few weeks, I have had the opportunity to speak with a number of you about your thoughts on the menu and what you liked, didn’t like and what you would like to see in 2023. Thank you to those who shared their thoughts and ideas. If I have not spoken to you and you wish to share your thoughts, please email or speak with me. Chef Malcolm and I will take this information and build a menu that keeps the classics, adds some new offerings and develop a weekly special insert to allow for more choice for those who dine regularly at the club.

Bursary Awards
In 2018 we introduced bursary awards in memory of Roy Emerton and Tom Sandell. Roy and Tom were long-time employees of Mad River and both passed away tragically. The awards celebrate the hard work and determination of Mad River’s seasonal employees who have embraced the pursuit of learning.  

This year we are proud to announce the winner of the Roy Emerton award is Caleb McConnell from grounds and the winner of the Tom Sandell award is Logan Delaat from the back shop. We are proud to be able to support both of them in the pursuit of their dreams.

Caleb has been a seasonal employee at Mad River for four seasons and is enrolled at Guelph University where he is taking turf management.
This was Logan’s first year at Mad River, Logan is a third-year student at Carleton University where he is studying aerospace engineering with a specialization in space systems and structures.

We had a terrific group of seasonal employees this summer and while Caleb and Logan were both star performers in their respective departments, we had so many others and I’m so grateful for all their efforts this summer.

Mens Mad League 
Firstly, A special thanks to our Pro Shop for their coordination of our year long League play. A special thanks to Myles Bradford, who has facilitated similar events over his years of experience however utilizing the Golf Genius Software can be challenging at times. It was a huge learning curve but in the end, it did enhance efficiency. Thanks Myles for your persistence!

The 2022 inaugural Mad Men’s League has come to an end. The final two teams of Arnie’s Army and The Wild Ones battled it out in the final week. Arnie’s Army prevailed. Congratulations to all that agreed to compete for the BS Cup. ( I hope everyone understands the significance of the acronym BS) The spirit of this Cup is to promote participation with minimal emphasize on winning. Having said that, members of the last two teams will see a Pro Shop credit on their account as long as they fulfilled their three appearance commitment throughout the year.

Overview
The month of September has been a great month for golf, with very little precipitation until recently.  This in combination with cooler daytime highs and cooler nights make September one of the best months of the year. Fall has now officially arrived, and it came in with ample rain recently along with some cooler temperatures.  We look forward to a great month of October for both golf and putting the golf course to bed for the winter season.

September is a very busy month with golf events, it seems as though we have had 2/3 events per week for the entire month.  This is challenging to accomplish everything that we need to, with limited time and light, but the grounds staff did a terrific job presenting the golf course for each and every event.

Recently, we have been extremely busy with construction of some new tees as well as installing some irrigation isolation valves throughout the property.

The past few weeks have been busy with a number of events, from this point on the calendar of activities begin to ease. We have two final outside events, the Wardens, which we were scheduled to host in 2020 and has been postponed until this fall due to the pandemic and our final year to host the GTA Amateur Tour.

Our golf course contractors are schedule to arrive this week and will begin tee work on the back nine and continue through the fall. We expect tee disruptions to be minimal and updates will be provided on the “Member Central” page of the website.

An apres shootout contest with all Tuesday closest to the pin winners will be live entertainment for all. Weather permitting we have tee times scheduled for two more Tuesdays after the closing lunch, October 11-Tombstone golf and October 18 -a just because day!

In the Loop

Well a lot of good golf being played at Mad by some of our members. This past Saturday, a personal best happened. Congratulations to a former Club Captain Andrew Senior! Most of us would have folded like a cheap suit when we realized we were even par after 14 holes. Andrew made mince meat of Cupp’s Mad Mile, with birdies on 15, 16 and 18! Wow, from the greens to boot! As Andrew himself would say, “Good shooting Tex!” 

Ok, we ordinarily don’t mention hole in one’s that occur at different golf courses. This is worth a congratulatory note! Last week, Michael Rothfeld (Rocky) had a hole in one on the 7th at Mystic Golf Club. One may ask, is this worthy of a Mad Post recognition? 

When it’s your third hole in one of the 2022 summer with the addition of a hole out eagle on 12 it certainly is worthy of a statistician to do a case study on this. Congrats Rock Star Rothfeld! Great shooting man!

The #1 flaw I see with players struggling with their short game is that they set up for power and not finesse.

If your upper body tilts away from the target, you have set yourself up for a power shot and not a finesse shot. Setting up for power will shallow your angle of attack and shift your low point further back, leading to both fat and thin shots.

Junior Club Championship

The 2022 Junior Club Championship was held on this past Saturday at Mad River. It was an exciting day full of great golf shots and big smiles. This year the Junior Club Championship had 9 eager participants looking to play great golf and take home the trophies.

The winner for the Girls Club Championship was Olivia Kelk. This was Olivia’s first time playing in the Girls Club Championship as well as playing her first 18 hole round.

The winner of the 9 hole Club Championship was Quinn Burrison. This year Quinn has been working very hard on his game and that day it payed off.

The Boys Junior Club Champion was Reid Burrison. It all came down to a 3 man playoff where Reid won the title on the second playoff hole.

A huge thank you to Katie & Walt Macnee for hosting the
2022 Divorce Open.  A record 82 participants played in
the event on Sunday, August 28th with all relationships
remaining intact as observed by the happy smiles and
enjoyment had at the reception following play.  

Thank you to all who participated and a huge applause
for Heather Johnston & Dean Elliott winners of the 2022 Divorce Open
with a score of net 61.  Heather & Dean are looking forward
to convening the 2023 Divorce Open.   

Well done Heather & Dean! 


Liz & Michael Fitzhenry came in second at the
Divorce Open narrowly missing the opportunity to host
the event in 2023 with a net 63!  Well done.

Hello Everyone,

Fabulous fundraising!! Mad River should be very proud for raising over $30,000 in support of Hospice Georgian Triangle. A record breaker! (Final count still to be tallied.) A big shout out and thank you to the men’s section for their support. Honourable mention and thank you to Walt Macnee, Tim MacDonald, and Tony Woodward for helping at the registration desk. They obviously survived playing in the Divorce Open this past Sunday!

Katie Macnee, Lisa Houston, Bonnie MacDonald & Cate Woodward did an amazing job, along with Sandy and our Mad River staff, to make this charity event a huge success. Although the weather man started out a little grumpy we were able to get our game in without incident. The golf gods shone on Katie, Lisa, Bonnie and Cate. They came in first and have the honour of hosting again next year. Question is - Will they accept the honour?

Mad Mens League

Gents, once again a huge thanks goes out to those of you that have attended and made the Wed game field much larger this year. 
 
Having said that, I have to convey my apologies for the mixed messaging from myself and the Golf Genius emails you’re receiving. I said at the outset of this year’s league format that there would be some challenges as it relates to coordination and how the league will play out.  As of late there has been some challenges and some mixed messages. I can assure you the Pro Shop is spending a great deal of time on it, however the Golf Genius Software can sometimes be the challenge. We are learning more and more about the software on a weekly basis, so thanks for your patience. 
 
This off-season we can spend time fine-tuning everything so that we can properly communicate to all participants at the start of next year, without any changes during the season.

We ended the month with 2 successful events: The Divorce Open and the Ladies Charity Event which everyone enjoyed. As the beautiful season of autumn falls upon us, we look forward to creating an exceptional President’s Cup and Madheim Cup experience. The menus look delicious.

We said good bye and good luck to our serving staff last week and are welcoming new ones. Please be sure to say hi and welcome them to the Mad River family. As we continue to find staff, Cupp’s Corner may not always have someone there to assist you so we have set up a sign out sheet for you to write down your member number if you take something like a Gatorade or sandwich so you do not have to wait.

FALL HOURS OF OPERATION:  
Cupp’s Corner is open 30 min before the first tee time and will close at 6:00pm.
Kitchen is open from 10:00 am - 8:00 pm

2022 Operating Plan update

As we approach the end of August, I thought it important to provide an update on the 2022 Operating Plan, including a brief financial update.

Our annual Operating Plan is set during budget deliberations and some of our objectives for this summer included;
  • The safety of staff and members through the next iteration of the Covid pandemic.
  • Continue to prioritize the golf course and maintain it in ‘pristine’ condition.
  • Plans to increase compensation rates for seasonal staff in order to attract candidates.
  • Resources to facilitate improvements to the golf operation services and food and beverage as identified in the 2020-member survey, in particular in back shop and front of house food and beverage service.
  • Continue accumulating capital for new projects that may arise from Long Range plans.
  • Successfully deliver our operating and capital budgets.

Golf Canada 2023 Ladies Mid-Amateur Championship

As you’ve no doubt heard, we will host the 2023 Golf Canada Canadian Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship next summer from July 24th – July 27th.

We understand Golf Canada expect this event could draw some top U.S. and International players as well as the best mid-amateur women in Canada.

This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the club, give back to Canadian amateur golf and help to grow the game with a particularly important demographic of Canadian golfers.

More communications will be forthcoming along with numerous opportunities to volunteers.

Hello Everyone,

Last Wednesday was “divot repair” morning. I was amazed at how many unfilled divots were on the course. The few that came out to help were only able to conquer half the front nine. Since then, I can’t help but notice all the fresh unfilled divots! Chad and his crew continuously work very hard to care for our golf course. Please do your part to help keep our course in good shape. Remember to fill your divots and repair your ball marks on the green!

Playoffs will begin Wednesday August 31st. Please make a special effort to attend the next few weeks. Unfortunately the last place team has been eliminated which I’m sure the Mad Men will even be madder!

Wait!! New life, the members from Men Mad are going into a draft and will join one of the other teams. The Pro Shop will do their best to have two guys from the same team play against players from another team. 
 
Next week we are moving to a Shot Gun format and hopefully will not have any disruptions or slow play along the way. 

Skins game will not change. 
 
If you wish to play earlier or later, please tell the shop that you will not be playing in the shot gun. 
 
Good luck, we will be off on Sept 07th for President’s Cup and moving to Thursday Sept 15th for our next Mens Day.

Canadian Ladies Mid Amateur
Mad River has been asked by Golf Canada to host the Canadian Ladies Mid Amateur Championship from July 24th – 27th, 2023 and the Board has unanimously endorsed this initiative.
 
This is the first time the event has been held as a stand-alone tournament and will bring many of the top mid-amateur golfers in Canada and the United States to our club. It is an honour for us to host a National Championship and another step in promoting the Mad River name across Canada and the United States.

The Club Championships concluded last weekend, and for some of our participants, this was their first time playing in this event. There are many reasons why players do not sign up for Club Championships, the most common one that I hear is that “I am not good enough” or “I’m embarrassed to post a HIGH score”. The Golf Activities committee made some changes to this year’s event in hopes to grow the participation and it paid off. There were Stableford flights added to the ladies event which meant no more high scores, in fact the higher your score (points), the better! We allowed players to play from the tee that they play on a normal game. There was even a flight in the men’s which was based on net scores as opposed to gross. I know that our captains have already congratulated our winners, I would like to THANK all of our members that signed up. This is a very important and special event on the calendar, and it was great to see it so well supported.

Hello Everyone, Club Championships have come and gone for another year. Amazing turnout with 20 ladies, up threefold from last year! Thank you to those who signed up and to those of you that at least gave it a thought. It’s difficult to do it all! The main thing is to enjoy whatever it is you opt to do. Having said that, I think all who participated enjoyed the event.

The “Horserace” was a huge success. Seven pairs teed off on the 15th hole and by process of elimination on completion of the 18th hole PA Irwin Allen & Lorraine Croll were our winners! Carl & Stephanie added a festive vibe with music & drinks on course while Michelle and crew had yummy hors d’oeuvres waiting for us back in the clubhouse.

Ladies Club Championship Results:
Congratulations to our Club Champion- Kristy Henry, with a gross score of 151 over 2 days.
Second place in the Championship flight went to Jan Atkinson Hall 171 points.
In the Stableford division, Samantha Lloyd won overall best net, with 76 points.
A Flight Winners: Teri Yamada 69 points, Anita Lorelli 66 points, Lesley Brightling 63 points.
B Flight Winners: Yvonne MacGowan 66 points, Charlene Wildridge 64 points, Hilarie Woods 58 points

Mens Club Championship Weekend August 13/14 

This past weekend the Golf Gods blessed us with perfect weather for perfect scoring. Having said that, the same Gods did not bless all of us with our best scores. This year participation was up 20% from a year ago. Our perennial club champion took on a large field to contend for the prestigious honours. Congratulations to Dean Henry for winning a very true and challenging Club C from the GOLD Tees. Dean fired an impressive 153 for the two days.

They say, “all good things must come to an end.” As summer comes to a close, we must say good - bye to our extraordinary servers, Abby, Felicity, Maddy and Olivia. These young women were fantastic this past season with their poise and character. I am truly proud of all of them and how they have grown as servers and as young women. Thank you to the members who have made a point to let me know as well as let these wonderful girls know how great they have been. This is their last week at Mad and they will be missed. We hope to see them back next year and we wish them all the best with their studies at their respective schools. Thank you, ladies! You made 2022 amazing for both your fellow colleagues, management and the Members.
 
As we move into the fall, we are grateful that the kitchen staff and Shasta will be staying to complete the season. These core individuals work hard to make your meal in a timely, tasty fashion and we are fortunate to have them as other clubs are struggling to maintain staff year over year.  We are currently in the recruitment process to hire new staff and during this transition, we anticipate a little disruption in service as we train the incoming servers. Your patience is requested and appreciated.

Hi Folks
 
Although we had to cancel the Friday night buffets, I have been busy creating some new menu items and dinner specials.  I am excited that tomatoes are in season and have added Caprese Salad onto the menu as well as a Fish of the Day. I have also created menus for upcoming events like the Mulmur Hills event, Tips n Sips, the Divorce Open and the Ladies Charity event. I am thankful for the feedback on items that I am using. For example, the fries, as we have now been using fresh cut and they seem to be a Member favourite so be sure to add a plate to share the next time you order the brisket or the clubhouse.
 
Looking forward to being part of the big events in September and seeing the course change with the beautiful fall foliage.

I’d like to clarify for you, the timing of the billings and payments.
 
Your Mad River statement is available to view on line, after the 4th of each month. An automatic email is generated advising you it is there. The bill you will be paying, is always the month’s charges. So, the August 4th statement reminder is advising you that July is ready to view and pay in full, and due before the end of August.
 
A late fee of 75.00 will be applied to all accounts not paid by the 15th of the following month. For example, if the July statement is not paid by the end of August, a late fee will be charged on Sept 15th.
 
For those that use credit card or have auto debit set up, the July balance will automatically be charged at the end of August.

Next Thursday is the kickoff event for the Ladies Club Championships, Aug 11-13.
Reasons to sign up:
- Be a part of our new fun Thursday evening “Horserace”, followed by Friday afternoon and Saturday morning tees times.
- Flexibility, if you can’t make the Thursday event (4:30-6:30pm) please advise when you sign up.
- Other than the championship flight, all will play Stableford. Once you reach net double bogey pick up.. No more big numbers.
- No pressure. “Forget your opponents. Always play against par.”
- Option of creating your own 3some if that makes you feel more comfortable, advise the pro shop.
- Opportunity to honour your club and celebrate your Club Champion with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres Saturday noon.

The month of August signifies that we have officially reached the midway point in the season. The first three months have seen a decrease in rounds played when compared to the last two years. Although rounds are down, it feels as though we have been busier in the pro shop. Sales in the shop have been strong to date and we also have a full event calendar to manage. Speaking of events, next week is our Ladies and Men’s Club Championships. Golf Course Update August 2022
It is hard to believe but we are now into August, the golf course is holding up well through the summer months.  The latter portion of July provided us with some timely rain events but prior to that, our crew had been working hard to manage water throughout the property.  Our grounds crew look forward to preparing the golf course for the upcoming Club Championship next week.

We have a few items we will be tackling in the coming weeks; these include:

  • Continuing to top up bunkers with sand
  • Planting a tree at 12 green tee
  • Topdressing our teeing grounds
  • Finishing the railing for the steps at #7
  • Surface treating cart paths at 1
  • Construction of 15 white tee

We have officially entered head light season, the mornings are getting darker for the grounds staff and the days are getting shorter. We have reached the mid-way point of the 2022 golf season.  As we enter August, generally the overnight temperatures are lower and the daytime temperatures aren’t as high (except for this past weekend) which is conducive to good grass growing weather with some timely beneficial rains.  The precipitation levels for the month of July & early part of August are as follows:

July – 140 mm July – 53 mm
August (entire month) – 33 mm August – 31 mm (as of August 8th)

Hello Everyone,

Another long weekend is upon us. How did it get to be the beginning of August?

August means it’s time for Club Championships? This year we are trying something different for the Ladies in attempt to increase support for the event and celebrate our course together. “A horserace” will kick off the event Thursday August 11at 430pm. Participants will be paired off , high and low handicaps together, to play a set number of holes depending on the size of our group. The pair with the highest score each hole will be eliminated. We all move on, as players or cheering bystanders, until we have a winner. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served afterwards, wrapping up around 630pm. First rounds are Friday afternoon August 12 with final rounds Saturday morning August 13, followed by a complimentary drink and hors d’oeuvres. Our championship flight will be stroke play from the purple tees, while all others will play Stableford from the red tees. If enough interest there could be a yellow tee category. Please consider signing up. We are doing our best to create a fun celebratory event. No pressure, only if you want it! Sign up is now open.

 Our Member Guest was held July 22nd. We were blessed by the Golf Gods with terrific weather. I have had nothing but positive feedback about the event. Congratulations to Dean Elliott and his guest David Nevells for winning the overall event and having a great day at the para mutual table. 

We will be sending out a survey monkey to the members that took part in the event as a best practices and learning if there is anything we can do better next year.

My heart was so full of joy while I was competing in the tournament at Chateau Bromont in Quebec at the beginning of July. It felt so good to be able to be back doing what I love, and I’m very thankful that I have recovered to this point since the car accident.

This was my first event in over a year because of the accident.  I am pleased to report that I am very happy with where my game is at and over the course of the 3 days I shot 81, 75, 74 (par was 73) and I placed Tied for 20th. I played better than I scored and I can see that I have gotten stronger and am hitting the ball farther, as well as striking the ball very solid. However, there were a few holes where I got myself into trouble and took some big numbers. I was +11 for the 54 hole tournament, but was +9 on 3 holes, ending up very solid overall for 51 holes.

As noted in my last Mad Post, an important feature of the new power cart fleet is the capacity to restrict where the carts are permitted to go. For the first couple weeks we left the restrictions off so we could track where the power carts were currently being driven.

In reviewing these reports, it’s clear too many power carts are being taken into either restricted or unsafe areas, such as right on the collars of our greens or into unsafe areas, such as up the hill directly beside the 17th green. It will take Chad and Carl some time to fine tune the prohibited areas of the course and we understand these restrictions may create some frustration for some users. But our overriding intention is to keep course conditions as pristine as possible and ensure user safety so carts aren’t being driven into areas where the carts might roll over. 

Generally speaking, there will be limits set up for proximity to our tees and greens while also keeping carts out of our fescue. Mad Mens League Update

This week we are having our first try at a shot gun start. As promised after the July 13th Mens Night, our Pros and I will be looking at the League standings and making some necessary trades to balance the teams. For the most part the standings are similar, however Arnies Army could use a little help.

As you may have noticed, the closest to the pin holes have a measurement tape. Please use it. On a few occasions groups have forgotten to replace the marker, which has caused me to conduct a full fledged investigation the following day. (I thought those days were behind me) If you are closest, you should have an exact measurement on the Proximity Card.

Our new power carts are now into their third week of operation at the club. So far, the feedback has been very positive, especially with the inclusion of the new GPS units. As Gary mentioned in his last Mad Post article, the new carts also allow us to control where they can, and more importantly, can not drive on the golf course. It is important to remember that controlling the carts is something very common at golf courses worldwide.

I am sure most of our members have played at another facility and experienced what happens when you drive into a restricted area. Typically, the speed of the cart is adjusted to slow it down, if not stop it altogether based on the location. In extremely sensitive areas, the carts can be stopped and will not move forward. Overview
June is always a dry month in southern Georgian bay, this combined with the longest days of the year make June one of our most difficult months.  This year has been no different, we went through a stretch of approx. 3 weeks with no significant precipitation, the golf course held up very well through this stretch thanks to a huge effort by Sean, Rob and our team!

We are now in the heart of the summer months and into invitational season.  We hosted our ladies’ event last week with good presentation of the golf course, we look forward to preparing the golf course for the Men’s event next week.

A Note from Your Chef:

Almost every day, I learn something about Mad River GC, its members and golf in general. I learned that many of you walk the course and that you like to take a protein bite as a snack. I learned that a lot of you prefer to have a beer after the round because there is “nothing like a cold one after a round”, accompanied by Miss Vickie’s salt & vinegar chips. You all love the chicken salad sandwich we serve in Cupp’s Corner and the Creemore shrimp continues to be a member favourite. I am happy to see you all enjoying the food and thank you for all your feedback.

We are still dealing with a few unresolved issues from the power outage on the 29th. The outage caused issues in our main water pump and it did not come back online with the power. Hello Everyone,

Thank you to all those who came out to play in our regular Tuesday Stableford game, combined with Senior Club Championships. If you holed out on every hole you qualified for the Championship title. Those that opted not to only had to focus on their Stableford points and were able to pick up, if they wished, if they went beyond net bogey. No pressure!! Perhaps those of you that missed will consider coming out for some fun next year.

PA Irwin Allen & Jan Atkinson Hall provided us with a little extra entertainment. We all watched them playoff for the championship title on hole #9. Congratulations to PA Irwin Allen, our 2022 Senior Club Champion, and to Jan Atkinson Hall who won the overall low net. Both players have earned a seat at the “Dinner of Champions” this fall.

Congratulations to Paul Wildridge our 2022 Senior Men's Champion shooting a 75. Michael Zettel was the winner of the Net Sr. Club Championship shooting a net 71.


There was an exciting finish to the Ladies event which required a playoff to determine the winner. After winning the sudden death playoff on hole #9, P.A. In last week’s “Tips & Sips”, I introduced the concept of Distance Wedges to the group and wanted to further elaborate on the topic.

Understanding Distance Wedges
Terms like Chipping and Pitching have been confusing golfers for decades, so it has been recommended by some of the great teachers across the globe that we replace these terms with “Finesse Wedges” and “Distance Wedges”.  Finesse wedges are essentially shots from inside of 30 yards that require a more delectate touch than a full swing shot.  Distance Wedges are essentially a mini full swing using a power sequence that usually carries through the air, somewhere in the range of 35 to 120 yards.  This will vary based on the player’s strength and skill level.

The top end of your distance wedges should equal the full carry distance of your Pitching Wedge.  The bottom end of your distance wedges will produce the shortest shots, and this is where you may find some overlapping yardages within both your finesse wedges and your distance wedges.  The decision to choose one over the other will be largely based on the shot you prefer to see.  For instance, if you are hitting a 35 yards finesse shot with a Sand Wedge, it will fly higher, land softer, and roll out more like a putt, whereas the same 35 yard shot with a Distance Wedge will fly lower and should have that sexy spin that you see on TV when a tour professional makes one check and stop beside the hole. (You need good grooves, the proper ball, and receptive greens to do this, btw). As you continue your journey to become a short game master, you will get better at these shots.

Round counts continue to normalize this summer, as an example, last June we recorded 4,999 rounds and we are on pace for about 3,200 this June, a significant reduction and actually lower than our 2019 total.

Despite the reduced play, the golf shop and f&b sales have remained strong. I have been asked if we’ve changed our f&b margins this year and we have not. Any increases you see on menu pricing is reflective of our increased costs to purchase, our budgeted margins have not changed. Mother Nature is confused. This past weekend was so cold and our Ladies’ Tuesday this week was almost too hot! A big thank you to Stephanie for keeping us cool with chilled towels on the course.

Due to poor signup for Ladies Senior Club Championships on Monday June 27, we will celebrate instead on Tuesday June 28. Come out and play for the Senior Championship prize or overall net Stableford prize or just come out and play a fun game of Stableford. You will have a chance of winning a seat at the Dinner of Champions held at the end of the season.

The third major of the season is this weekend as The Country Club, just outside of Boston, hosts the US Open. There have been numerous distractions leading up to the event because of the upstart LIV Golf Tour…League…not sure what to call it? The leaderboard after day one already has a lot of star power so it should make for a great weekend regardless of all the other headlines trying to overshadow the event.

Hi Folks

Hard to believe that July is just around the corner. I am getting into the swing of things around here and am getting to know the differences/similarities between the golf club industry and the restaurant environment. The principles are the same but the needs and wants sure are different. One of the similarities is that we have to work with food costs and keep them under control. As everyone is aware, inflation has gone up and it doesn’t look like it is slowing down anytime soon and we all have to be mindful of it. Prices we get quoted are not what we actually pay and sometimes we don’t even get the product or service we requested. Suppliers are struggling and do their best to get the product or a substitution but sometimes there just isn’t anything available.

Supply chain issues have delayed the delivery of our new power cart fleet from the U.S. They were ordered last August and our expected delivery was February, then March and so on. The most critical issue with our current fleet is the battery life is now exhausted and many of the carts won’t hold a charge for 18 holes.

For the past few weeks our supplier has been indicating the delivery of our fleet was imminent and so mitigating steps for our fleet was not necessary. However, the issue has become increasingly frustrating for us with carts running out of charge on course every day. We’ve come to a temporary solution and the manufacturer will be on site the rest of this week replacing the batteries in all our carts to ensure they can be reliable until our new fleet arrives with the new expected arrival date now looking like the end of the month.  ]]> Thu, 09 Jun 2022 04:00:00 GMT <![CDATA[Golf Operations Update]]>

This is an exciting week for golf in our nation as the Canadian Open returns after a two-year hiatus. Although the upstart LIV Tour has been stealing the headlines in the golf world, I know what I will be watching come Sunday afternoon. There is a great crop of young, talented, and hungry Canadians in the field this week. There are also some veterans, one that I will be rooting for to make the cut. I had the pleasure to play with Wes Heffernan from Calgary while living out west. He is a class act and a fantastic player. In a US Open practice round with Fred Couples and Davis Love III, they both questioned why he was not playing the PGA Tour full-time based on how he struck the ball. He is in the field this week for the first time in over a decade. Best of luck to Wes, and all the Canadians in the field this week!

Summer is making a slow entrance, but we know when it comes, it will be fabulous and with summer, comes BBQ season!  We are in the final stages of getting the patio stones installed so we can put the tables and chairs out permanently. Once these are set, we will run the BBQ every weekend unless the weather is not favourable (typically cold or persistent rain) and it will run from 11:00 - 3:00.  We will serve hot dogs, sausages and switch between beef and chicken burgers.

We are only one month into the season, and we already have two cars that have been struck by errant shots on holes #12 and #18. The first incident occurred last Thursday, May 26th when a car on the left side of the parking lot was hit in the windshield from a shot coming from the 12th hole. Last night, Wednesday June 1st, another car was struck, also in the windshield, while parked facing the 18th hole. What a difference a year makes! Last year we opened, like every other golf course in the province, on the Victoria Day long weekend. Over the course of those three days, we averaged well over 200 players a day. This past weekend we did not have one day with over 200 players. The weather likely played a factor in this reduction, however, the decrease in demand for the 1st tee is certainly something we are noticing and monitoring during the month of May.

While covid will no doubt continue to be a presence in our lives, it’s been wonderful to start the season under less restrictions. We’ve hosted the opening cocktail reception along with both the ladies and mens opening breakfast and golf, and it’s clear, members are excited about being able to socialize again!

Notwithstanding the service disruptions and restrictions we’ve all experienced these past two years, tee access has been the area of greatest concern for our members and for management. Between filling the membership and the increased demand to play golf, our rounds played increased significantly. I’m often asked what our long-term objectives are for tee access and what our ideal annual round count might look like post-covid?

Overview
Our spring Poa patrol is now in full effect, the poa is now in seed and is easy to identify and physically remove from our putting surfaces.  It has been a great spring season for poa, very cool to start the season for the most part, Poa starts to grow at much lower temperatures than does creeping bent grass.  We will be on patrol for about 2-3 weeks, you may notice large groups of staff crawling across greens at times, this is an extremely tedious and time-consuming task, our staff do a fantastic job keeping our bent grass surfaces clean.

This spring we were able achieve our desired results from our aeration and topdressing of our putting surfaces, we keep our greens at a little higher height of cut in the spring in order to grow roots so it they can withstand the heat and stresses of the summer season ahead. Right now, all grasses are trying to produce seed, even our bent grass plants on our greens, this usually produces a little coarser textured leaf blade.  In the coming days, we will be lowering our heights of cut and green speeds will increase, this is no different than years past, we must be patient as it is still early in the season.

We are off and running with events and regular golf play with Ladies and Men's Day occurring earlier this week. As they are different than in years past, we are excited to offer unique meals for when they are all done and are looking for feedback. This weekend, we are hoping to run the BBQ depending on the weather and will be promoting Bangarang Seltzers for everyone to try. These are very similar to White Claw and are offering fun flavours like Mango, Blue Raspberry, Grape and Cream Soda. It's like being a kid again!

A Note from Your Chef:

Hello Folks,

I have been busy creating menus for upcoming events like 9 & Dine and Ladies Member/Member and am looking forward to showcasing my passion for cooking and baking. I am focussing on healthier options this year but I do enjoy my sweets. The lemon cheesecake on our dessert menu is baked in house and is topped off with blueberry compote and for our gluten free Members, I have made a chickpea based brownie which we top off with house made chocolate sauce. These desserts are a great way to finish the evening after you have dined with us or to have on its own accompanied by an espresso in the sunroom.

What an opening week! We started with the Spring Thaw followed by the Opening Breakfast for the Men and then topped it off with our Mother’s Day Brunch. Based on the comments and feedback, everyone had an amazing time and enjoyed all the food. It was so great to see everyone relaxed and enjoying socializing again.

The AGM was held this past weekend, congratulations to incoming Director Lale Macintosh on her election to the Board for a three-year term. Re-elected for a term of three years is Teri Yamada and both Doug Painter and Brian Swales volunteered to serve and were re-elected for additional one-year terms.

Leaving the Board after five years of service is Rosemary McIntosh. Rosemary served in various capacities and will be dearly missed; she plans to continue to volunteer and will remain as the Chair of the Clubhouse taskforce. Please take a moment when you see her next to thank her for her dedicated service.

Golf Course update May
Opening day is now upon us and our weather continues to challenge us, cooler than normal temperatures seem to be lingering.  Warmer weather is forecasted next week, along with some much-needed sunshine.  A few items for your information upon your return include:

  • Right side rough at #1 fairway will be out of play for the first month of the season while we wait for the grass seed to grow in in this area
  • The greens and collars have been aerified, recovery and growth has been slow due to the cool and wet weather
  • While we wait for recovery, greens will be slower than normal
  • We lost a couple large trees beside #7 forward tee during a couple different windstorms over the winter season, we decided to use this opening that has been created to rough in some steps to access 7 tee
  • We had some grub damage around the 5th and 8th teeing areas, these areas will be sodded in the weeks to come
  • We opened up a view from the fourth green in order to be able to see the pond at 17, this was a recommendation from our course architect

So, are you ready?? Golf fitness is a big trend these days. Prepare your body by improving your core strength, mobility and flexibility to add longevity and prevent injury in your golf game. Both Ryan & Carl are TPI certified and would be happy to discuss the benefits of a deeper understanding of how your body functions during the golf swing. I completed the assessment last fall and have found the personalized fitness exercises with video instruction helpful.

I recently listened to an incredible interview with the Chief Executive Officer of the R&A (The co-governing body for the sport of golf worldwide), and something within his words resonated with me.  Much of the focus of his conversation was to do with having fun.  For years now, the governing bodies have been trying to make the game more difficult and perhaps Tiger had something to do with it when, in 1997, he won his first Green Jacket by shooting -18 in the Master’s tournament, beating the field by 12 shots.

On behalf of Chef Malcolm, myself and our Food & Beverage team, we officially welcome you to your 2022 Golf Season at Mad River!!!! We are open and excited to serve you this year’s menu and unique beverages.  Daily Specials and weekend BBQs will start Victoria Day weekend along with weekly drink and beer features. Cupp`s Corner is open from  7:00am-7:00pm daily where you can order our famous Mad Muffin, baked goods, confectionary items and beverages.

Although I am going into my 3rd season at Mad, I feel like it is my first as we will be running all the events that the Club did prior to 2020.  The season starts off with a full weekend which includes the Spring Thaw, the Men’s Opening Breakfast and of course our Mother’s Day Brunch. Together, we will make your dining experiences tasty and keep you wanting more. Our main focus this year is to be consistent and offer you timely service so as we continue to train staff and deal with some supply shortages, we ask that you be patient and be understanding with us.

Remember to use the Mad River App to order ahead before teeing off or to order items for pick up at Cupp’s Corner before you make the turn. You can also call the Clubhouse at 705-428-3673 ext. 6.  We look forward to serving you and doing our best to provide exceptional service.  Again, welcome back and here’s to an Amazing 2022!

We will continue with some Covid-19 protocols to keep everyone safe and comfortable. We will be wearing masks, sanitizing all work areas and there will be sanitizer stations at each entrance to the dining room, Cupp’s Corner and at the buffets.

Dear Member, 
 
On April 21st, the Mad River Board of Directors met to finalize our opening Covid protocols.  
 
We have followed provincial health and medical advice since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 and it is our intent to continue to do so as we manage through this next iteration of the pandemic.
 
As we have done from the outset, we also researched Covid plans for other private golf clubs across Canada and in the GTA.
 
It’s our plan to begin the season as follows and adapt Club protocols throughout the season as circumstances change;
 
  1. Mandatory vaccinations are not required for members, guests or staff in order to use any of the facilities, including entering the building or to consume food and beverage indoors
  2. We will continue to require members, guests and staff to wear masks while indoors as an added precaution, however not when seated to consume food and beverage
  3. We will continue to require members to complete the annual Covid declaration form confirming their compliance with the Club’s Covid protocols
  4. We will continue to require guests to complete a Covid declaration form in advance of attending the Club
  5. We will continue to require staff to complete a daily Covid screening and we will require bi-weekly testing for any staff that may not be vaccinated.

The wait is almost over, and our 2022 season will finally get started next Wednesday, May 4th. I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight a couple of changes our members will notice when they arrive for their first round. The first is our scorecard which has been re-designed over the off-season. Aside from the new dimensions, the new card will be the only version printed this season. We will no longer require a hybrid card, as the SHORT and LONG hybrids have been incorporated into the new version. These two hybrid tees have been placed in between the regular tees. Members playing the hybrid tees can easily determine which deck to play from by following the arrows (see image below). If you are a hybrid tee player and need some help understanding the new card, please speak with one of the golf professionals.

Golf Course Update Spring 2022
We continue to be challenged by cold temperatures well into the spring season, this has included snow and plenty of rain to date.  Soil temperatures remain much colder than normal and forecasts for this week include below freezing overnight temperatures with additional snowfall.  Although we still plan to aerate our green surfaces prior to opening, the cold temperatures have pushed back our aeration plans to later this week.  We remain one to two weeks behind the last few spring seasons due to these unseasonably cold temperatures.

Hello Everyone, Our planning for the season continues…

We are reviewing our annual Ladies’ charity event. Gilda’s Club of Simcoe-Muskoka has been the recipient of funds raised for a number of years. This event raises anywhere between $10,000-$15,000. The recent Ladies’member survey indicated that while there is support for an annual fundraiser perhaps there are other local charities worth considering, especially during these difficult times.

A list has been compiled for your review and you will have the opportunity to vote on the charity, or charities that you would like to see benefit from your contribution. We will ask for your top 3 choices and your preference for a singular gift or dividing the funds between two charities and/or alternating the charity each year. “Read more” to see the list or review the list posted on the bulletin board by the Pro Shop. In the event that there is a local charity you feel strongly about that we overlooked you can tell us in the comment section of the survey.

Come out to the Ladies opening breakfast May 14 to cast your vote. Alternative arrangements will be made if you cannot attend the breakfast. We want to hear from you!

I hope everyone is as excited as I am for next week’s May 04th Opening Day. The driving range will be open this weekend for you to shake some of the winter rust off.
 
 This past Tuesday, you would have received an invitation to join our exciting new Wednesday, Mad Men’s League. This year’s league play has been designed to be more inclusive to those Men that are working and would like to play after work. If you would like to choose your foursome of gents, then enter Mens day by notifying the Pro Shop and play whenever you wish on Wednesday.  Please take the time to register and answer the questions prepared by our Pros. It will provide us an opportunity to evenly choose teams for the year long totals. Please keep an ‘open mind’ to the changes to past formats. I promise it will gain traction and become a lot of fun. If you prefer to reply to the invitation by calling the pro shop, they will be happy to register you.

Get golf ready is a weekly 90-minute program designed to help you with the skills you need to play the game.  In your 5-week group program, you will learn the essentials such as grip, stance, ball position, posture, and alignment and start to understand why these fundamental setup skills are so important.  You will also learn more about putting, the short game, and the full swing.

I hope you all had a great winter and were able to either travel south to work on your games or spend some quality learning time in the Trackman Simulator at the club.  As always, I spent my off season learning better ways to help you improve your game and I’m excited to be headed to the Titleist Performance Institute in Oceanside, CA the first week of June to once again spend time with some of the world’s top instructors including PGA Tour coaches Mark Blackburn, James Seickmann, and Dave Phillips. 
 
I’ve been receiving plenty of messages from members asking if we will have some adult programs up and running after seeing the Junior Programs available.  I am excited to have this opportunity to get you better informed, so let’s get started.  I should add that this is just the beginning.  More offerings are set to launch in the weeks to come, so please stay tuned!
