Architect

“My ultimate goal for Mad River is to provide fun golf for a large variety of talents in a beautifully unique and exclusive setting.”

Bob Cupp, Course Architect

Mad River’s founders gave golf architect Bob Cupp a dream assignment: assist in the selection of a property in the Creemore area with all the elements a designer covets. He found a location with beautiful slopes, rolling meadows, mature trees and no demand for housing that made the perfect site. The Mad River we enjoy today is a testament not just to Cupp’s design skills but to the freedom he was given to create a truly great golf course.

Bob Cupp brought deep experience to the Mad River project. As chief designer for Jack Nicklaus Design for 15 years, he had been responsible for more than 90 new courses worldwide. Since establishing his own firm in 1984, Cupp has added another 100 new courses and almost 50 renovations to his resumé, including the host courses of many major international championships. He is also the 2012-13 President of the American Society of Golf Course Architects.

Before Bob passed in 2016 we were fortunate that Bob maintained a close interest in the evolution of the Club. In addition to guiding numerous minor alterations as the course matured over the years, Bob was fully responsible for the major changes made to the course in 2012. His involvement ensured that the essential character of Mad River – enjoyment, playability and challenge – remained intact.

At the recommondation of Bob Cupp, Mad River retained the services of renowned Canadian Golf Course Architect Doug Carrick.  In 2018, Doug Carrick will begin work on developing a Master Plan for the golf course.
