The 32nd Annual Mad River Classic

On Monday, September 21st, Mad River will once again host the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital Foundation Golf Tournament, known as The Mad River Classic.

This annual event sells out almost immediately when tickets are released through the Foundation office each spring and is an important fundraiser in support of our local hospital. Mad River is pleased to support this initiative, which brings golfers, sponsors and community supporters together for a very worthwhile cause.

Well, somehow, we avoided the severe weather last Wednesday and were able to play our MAD League final with only one short delay of about 40 minutes.  Congratulations to Pinot Noir, led by past captain Colin Tyler, who defeated Blew Bayous and their fearless leader Kevin Edwards to take home league bragging rights for 2026!  Colin threw down the gauntlet with a very impressive gross 71 to lead the way.  Huge thank you to all the guys who came and supported their teams throughout the summer.  In addition to the teams in the final, we had a great turnout last week despite the weather forecast.  I would like to thank Chris Sloan, Morgan Rubes, Kevin McKenzie and Brad Robbins, and of course Colin and Kevin, who captained their teams with enthusiasm (and occasional great golf) all summer long.  Their leadership shone through as we experienced higher average attendance in 2026 than in years past.  Well done everyone!!

The Confident Golfer: How to Stop Getting in Your Own Way on the Course

“The most important six inches in golf aren't between your hands — they're between your ears.”

Let me tell you about a student of mine — I'll call him Mark. Mark has a beautiful golf swing. Smooth tempo, solid contact, the kind of mechanics that make other players on the range stop and watch. On the practice tee, he's a single-digit handicap. On the course? He plays like a 16.

Mark's problem isn't physical. He doesn't need a new driver, a different putting grip, or another swing tip from YouTube. Mark's problem is that somewhere between the range and the first tee, a voice in his head starts talking — and it doesn't say kind things.

If you've ever stood over a shot and thought, “Don't go left. Please don't go left. Anything but left” — and then watched the ball sail left — you know exactly what I'm talking about. You're not broken. You're human. And this is fixable.

September at Mad River

September brings a different rhythm to the Club. With the kids back to school, things may be a little quieter around the clubhouse during the week. Well, at least until the weekend rolls around and we get some of our younger members back! One thing that certainly hasn’t slowed down is the golf. This past long weekend, we welcomed more than 200 golfers to the tee sheet each day.

That energy looks set to continue as we head into the President’s Cup, another busy weekend and then MADheim. We’re excited for this final stretch of golf events, along with the many social events still to come and plenty of reasons to keep enjoying the Club throughout September.

Notes from the Chef Stephen Sagar

From the Grill

Labour Day has come and gone and we are about to put the BBQ away for the season. Well, maybe not just yet.

With this tee time of the year comes one of my favourite months; in and out the kitchen. I can’t speak for everyone but there seems to be a universal kinship with cooler weather and the shift in what we nourish ourselves with: spices, soups, stews and baking.

This week, with Stephanie’s suggestion, I opened the fall season with a Carrot Ginger Soup with Fresh Basil, made with coconut milk and vegetable broth. It's my own little twist on the classic French Potage Crécy, traditionally a simple carrot soup named after Crécy, France, a region historically associated with carrots.

A Lucky Labour Day Hole-in-One!
Labour Day weekend proved to be a very lucky one for Mike Zettel, who was out enjoying his regular Monday game when he scored an ace on #7 using his pitching wedge!

The memorable shot was witnessed by Grayling Lamont, George Pengelley and Ron Taylor.

What a way to wrap up the Labour Day weekend. Congratulations, Mike!

Coach Stephanie and the next generation of Mad River golfers.

What better way to spend Labour Day weekend than with a Girls’ Golf Camp.

Under the guidance of Coach Stephanie, our young golfers spent the summer building their skills, gaining confidence and, most importantly, discovering just how much fun the game of golf can be. From learning the fundamentals to enjoying time together on the course, there were plenty of smiles, laughs and new friendships along the way

Just a reminder!

Thank you from your Mad River Staff & Management

A heartfelt thank you to our members for making Labour Day Weekend at Mad River such a wonderful one. It was a busy and memorable weekend, and we truly appreciate the great spirit and camaraderie around the Club.

While Labour Day may mark the unofficial end of summer, there is still plenty of great golf ahead! Fall is one of the most beautiful times of year at Mad River, and we look forward to enjoying many more rounds, and those spectacular autumn colours, with you in the weeks ahead.
