Presidents Message – Mad Post October 2019
As the Mad River golf season draws to a close, it seems appropriate to reflect on a year of significant, positive change.
I think everyone would agree that with the infusion of 35 new members and their families, the enthusiasm and engagement at the club is palpable.
The smooth operation of the club is because of the diligence and capabilities of the staff, led by Gary, while your Board has fulfilled its role in trying to ensure the long-term health and viability of Mad River.
The Grounds committee, under the leadership of Bob Cook, has focused on possible improvements to our course proposed by Doug Carrick, our renowned Canadian architect. The Grounds committee has done a significant amount of work in evaluating the proposals and categorizing the various options into high, medium, and low priorities. Nothing will be decided until the membership has vetted any changes and any attendant costs.
Your Board would like to move ahead at the end of next season, with the expansion and redesign of the back shop which is presently over its reasonable capacity. We have safety concerns for the employees and members, and we believe an expansion and redesign will ease traffic congestion, increase storage capacity, and provide a more efficient service to our members.
A Funding Task Force has been struck by the Board in order to evaluate various alternatives to finance new capital initiatives such as this, when they are approved by our members.
Under Bill Strain's leadership, the Finance and Audit Committee has undertaken an insurance review, a risk management assessment and changes to our balance sheet reporting. This is in addition to their regular responsibilities of oversight on all financial matters at the club. I can report that the club is in a strong financial position with momentum created by the success of the Drive for 35.
