With the golf course opening and early season events behind us, I have been fielding questions regarding the upcoming projects and disruption to golf. Here’s a summary that you will find helpful.

Once the project begins, the contractor will work Monday to Friday only, there will be no work on weekends.

Today - July 2nd - all 18 holes remain open under regular playing conditions

July 2nd – August 22nd - all 18 holes remain open
Irrigation mainline installation begins - work primarily along out of play areas, through trees, across fescue and rough.

July 14th – August 22nd - all 18 holes remain open
Course work on #6 and #17 greens and #12 tee and fairway begins - #6 (remains a par 4) and #17 (remains a par 5), both played to manicured temporary greens, #12 (becomes a par 3) to current green.

August 22nd
This is the target date for the course work on #6, #17, #12 and irrigation mainline installation to be completed.

August 25th – end of the season – except weekends

Hole by hole irrigation installation and bunker revitalization begins – starting on #16.
At this point until the end of the season, we can expect disruption to the number of holes in play on weekdays, weekends all 18 holes will remain in play.

The second major of the season concluded on Sunday night…as well as the Leafs season. In both cases, the finishes were anticlimactic. The results of both felt like a forgone conclusion before Scottie put a tee in the ground, or the Leafs stepped on the ice for warm ups. In the case of the PGA Championship, it was a tough act to follow what happened at Augusta in April. It felt like golf fans, myself included, were still trying to recover from the Rory slam. I know three fans that were quite happy and engaged with the finish of the PGA. This would be our top 3 finishers in the MAD Majors Pool. Congratulations to Stephen Headford for winning 1st place with a team score of -25. Stephen has been Mr. Consistency in our majors pool over the last several years with multiple wins and top three finishes. If you happen to hear or see Stephen at any point discussing who he thinks might win the US Open next month, I suggest pulling up a chair. Rounding out the top three was David Allen in second place at -17, and Stephen Maloney in third at -15. Congratulations to our winners and best of luck in the US Open!

The golf course at this time of year tends to be a variety of all kinds of colours and textures, for many folks that suffer seasonal allergies they will know all too well that this is due to all grasses and trees for that matter, trying to produce seed in order to reproduce themselves.

This makes the golf course generally play slower than normal, and the appearance as a stand of turf isn’t exactly what we are looking for.  The good news is this will be short lived, seeding will slow down in the next couple weeks and things will be back to normal.

We will try to take advantage of this by physically removing Poa plants on our green surfaces while it is easily identifiable, this process will be on going this week and next as we work our way through the property.

The Opening Shotgun was well attended with 35 ladies ready to hit the course. It was a perfect weather day. Stephanie and Shawn did a great job organizing us. Laura Neves had a super round of golf breaking 90 for the first time, hitting closest to the pin on hole #3 and being part of the winning team of Lauree Patrick, Liz Hoffman and Sheila Kaarlela. Cathy Carl was closest to the pin on hole #14.  We didn’t have a ‘longest putt’ winner.  I guess we’ll be practicing those putts over 5 feet!

The 4-Ball Match Play grids and the Singles Match draws are being prepared and you will get a notification when it is finalized. Coming soon!

Our first Saturday Skins of the season took place this past weekend. Despite some weather interruptions, we had good participation with sign-ups before the round. The next Saturday Skins is on May 31st, and Alan will be assisting with sign-ups on the first tee. Please remember to submit your scorecard after your round, noting your tee selection.
The Team portion of our League starts tomorrow! Team Captains completed the draft yesterday, and team assignments are now visible on the Golf Genius portal. Your team hat will be available for collection soon.

If you haven't signed up for the League yet, please contact Shawn ([email protected]) via email or in person, and we'll get you on a team. Participating in even a few Wednesday League days is welcome – plus, you'll receive a team hat!

Notes from the Chef Stephen Sagar

The first few weeks of the season has been exactly as I was expecting: fun, new, interesting and exciting. Apart from meeting Michelle’s great team, I have had the opportunity to meet more and more members, all of whom have been so welcoming. There have been a handful of requests for me to provide recipes and ideas, and this seems to be the perfect platform for me to share tips and tricks of the trade. If there are any specific recipes that we have served that would like me to provide, please email me and I will add the recipe to the Mad Post for everyone to read. My fist recipe is the saline solution that we soak our turkey breast in. Feel free to brine your chicken breast as well to ensure a juicy final product.
