Project Update
The bent grass seeding on #17 is complete and sod work will be completed by the time you read this message. Today they will seed #6 green and lay all the sod surrounding the green by Wednesday. They will then move back to #12 to complete the sod and seeding. Due to the 2 days of rain interruption last week, we pulled them from #12 in order to get #17 and #6 seeded.

By next week, we expect 100% of the Northgate crew to be allocated to hole-by-hole bunker revitalization for the remainder of the summer. They will generally be working on 2 holes at a time; one team will be working on excavation and rough shaping and the other on drainage and Better Billy bunker preparations. The bunkers will be left awaiting the Better Billy application until there is a minimum of 10-12 bunkers to spray. Once the spray has been applied and quality approved, the sand will be installed, followed by the sod.

When the bunker work is underway the holes they are working on will either play to a temporary green in the fairway or from a temporary tee in the fairway, depending on where the bunker work is occurring. For the holes where the bunker work is complete and awaiting the Better Billy application, the holes will re-open, and the bunkers will be considered “ground under repair”.

Pro Shop Update
This is the time of year when we have to say goodbye to many of our students that work in the pro shop and back shop. I would like to thank all of them for their efforts this season in providing both the members and their guests with a world-class golf experience and wish them all the best as they take or continue their next step in life.

We know this past week has been a challenging week for members, not only with the scheduled aeration, which had to be delayed due to our first rain day in months, but the start of additional hole closures due to bunker renovations. We appreciate all of your patience and understanding as we continue to push through this construction project. As you have seen by Gary’s updates, there has been a lot of progress with #12 and #17 sod laid and the holes really starting to take shape.

This week we have the finals of our Mad League occurring with Team Black taking on Team Grey this Wednesday to determine the champions. A big shout out to our Men’s Captain Colin Tyler, Vice-Captain Dean Elliott and Assistant Professional Shawn Bodiam for their efforts all year with the league and all the events.

Last Tuesday we had 15 players for our 9 hole Scramble game. It was predicted to rain in the afternoon, but the skies opened early, and we had a consistent rainfall all morning. Good news for our farmers but golfers not so much. There was a tie for first place with a score of -7 and placing first decided by retrogression was the team of Judy Adams, Kim Edwards and first time Tuesday participant Karen Albrektsen. Closest to the Pin winners were first time Tuesday participant Daiva Norkus on hole #3 and Lauree Patrick on hole #7. There wasn’t a longest putt over 5 ft. on hole #9.

With the season winding down, we have a couple of very busy weeks ahead. We'll be wrapping up the Chase for the Creemore Cup with our final Saturday Skins, the Mad League Finals featuring Team Black and Team Grey, and one of the best events of the year in our Ryder Cup. As of writing this, there are only a couple of spots left for the Ryder Cup, so be sure to register here! New this year, each member of the winning team will receive a Creemore Brewery prize package, so there is something more to play for this year!

While Tim Martin seems to have put up the ultimate title defense and has all but secured the trophy again, the real race is for an invite to the Creemore Cup event, which is reserved for the Top 16. There are more than a handful of players within a few points of that cutoff, and an invite to this coveted event on Friday, October 3rd, is on the line. The current standings can be found here.

How to Make Better Ground Contact in Golf

1. Set Up for Success
  • Ball Position: Slightly ahead of center for irons, more centered for wedges.
  • Weight Forward: Begin with about 60% of your weight on your front foot. This promotes a descending blow.
  • Hands Slightly Ahead: At address, your hands should be just slightly ahead of the ball to encourage forward shaft lean.  Click on 'read more' below.

Notes from the Chef Stephen Sagar

With August approaching its conclusion, I get very excited with the prospect of using fall flavours and textures. I would like to think that soups and stews are two of my strong suits in my deck of culinary cards and with September and October a chip shot away, I’m eager to showcase some newer dishes. Soups like Butternut Squash and Pear, Parsnip and Ginger, Turkey and Corn Chowder and many others.

Over the course of the summer, the kitchen team and I have worked diligently to make unique ‘Soups of the Moment’ and I hope to continue this tradition of variety and freshness. Thank you to everyone who continues to try our offerings each day and see you in September.
