THE MAD POST

Now that most of the work on the back nine has been completed, the front nine has experienced more disruptions over the last couple of weeks. You may have noticed issues when trying to post scores on the handicap computer or app. A reminder that for a score to eligible for posting, even when it is incomplete, must include at least one nine played completely. Since hole #12 is not being played, the back nine cannot be played from start to finish. Therefore, when holes are out of play on the front nine, it creates a situation in which you cannot post a score. If you enter hole-by-hole scores, the system will display an error message.

Keep in mind that this only affects play on weekdays when the project work is ongoing. On weekends, when all holes are open for play (except #12), you can continue to post your scores. The active season in Ontario is April 15th to October 31st. If you do play a round from November onward in Ontario, you are not allowed to post those scores. Keep in mind, if you travel over the winter to play golf, those scores should be posted as well. If you have any questions about your handicap, please do not hesitate to reach out.

The weather continues to be exceptional for this time of year, this has helped us with the grow in and maturity of the new greens and approaches as well as the new fairway at #12.  Getting full cover on these areas will help them to overcome the stresses of the winter season.

We have been covering these surfaces at night when there is a potential for frost, this helps them continue to grow and mature prior to the winter ahead.

Some of you may have noticed some digging throughout the property, and the small traps that are out the golf course.  We have had some skunks that are digging for grubs, the extremely warm weather has kept any grubs that are around close to the surface, unfortunately no treatment will work at this time of year to remove the grubs, we must wait until the weather turns cooler, this way the grubs will go deeper to over winter in the soil rather than the surface.  We did treat the majority of the property in the summer when timing was appropriate, In 2026 our treatment area will be larger, to include fairways and all of the fine turf surfaces. ( grubs generally like the rough areas).  We had a few cold nights last week and expect a few more this week, activity certainly seems to be slowing down.

Our Gobble Gobble golf game got gobbled up by a rainy forecast. Five of us played that morning and we were pleasantly surprised that the weather was as good as it was. Slight drizzle on the last 2 holes. Yvonne Penning chipped into the baskets on the range from 12 yards out. Celeste Dunford was closest to the pin on hole #7. Celeste finished the round with 3 strokes to spare and Judy Adams had 1 stroke left. Yvonne played 9 holes and Frances Painter and I used up our strokes on the last hole!

The wrap-up of the Men’s Section events for 2025 was celebrated last Wednesday with our Fall Classic. The very difficult-to-get-at pins and the variety of tees were successfully conquered by the winning team of Patrick Meneley, John Van Den Elzen, Chris Walker, and Paul Devries. Congratulations to that team of new friends! Their victory is a great reminder that one of the most underrated aspects of participating in our events is the chance to meet new members and play with people you may not know yet. That, and that sometimes it's not so easy to Top 10 in a scramble.  And congratulations also to Morgan Rubes for winning the shootout.

As the season winds down, and each event passes, it has been genuinely nice to reflect on the last two seasons and how much I have enjoyed my time as Captain. My last official act as Captain comes this Thursday at our annual Champions Dinner. This is always a great event, and I’ve had the privilege of attending it the past few years, but it’s even more enjoyable getting to be the one to congratulate and celebrate each of the winners from the past year. Now, I do fully intend on qualifying for that dinner myself next year, so I might have to be careful not to make too many jokes at the expense of my upcoming competition for a seat at the table!

Jeff Hayward - Congratulations!
Hole in One this Thanksgiving Saturday on #14 using a 7 iron playing from the Green tees. Witness by his playing partner Andrew MacEachern.
This is Jeff’s second HIO at Mad River, his first was on August 6th 2024, Hole #3 also from the Green Tees.
Well done!

BRIDGE UNDER PAR!
Lauree Patrick and Sharon De Lorenzi teamed up for what can only be described as a legendary golf ball retrieval mission under the bridge on #10. With determination, teamwork, and a whole lot of laughter, they maneuvered their way into position, all in the name of saving that one rogue ball.

Thankfully Nancy O’Donnell-Jeffery was able to stop laughing, just long enough to snap the pic!
