Project Update

It looks like a terrific forecast this week which should result in excellent progress for both contractors. Here’s a summary chart of the bunker work completed and what’s remaining to be done, these percentages are as of last Friday;

  • Excavation team – 100% complete
  • Drainage team – 86% complete – expect 100% complete October 3rd
  • BBB team – 59% complete – expect 82% complete October 3rd
  • Sand Installation – 59% complete – 73% complete October 3rd
  • Sod Installation – 37% complete – 59% complete October 3rd
The 14-day forecast also looks promising and if it proves to be accurate, during the week of October 6-10, I expect our completion status may look closer to the following;
  • BBB team – 100% complete
  • Sand Installation - 87% complete
  • Sod Installation – 80% complete

As I wrote my article for this week’s Mad Post, the Ryder Cup result was all but decided. Team Europe put on a masterclass over the first two days of competition. By the time you read this post, hopefully Rory and company are just getting over their hangover. The men’s Cupp’s Cup will also have been played, hosted by Beacon Hall yesterday. The men will also try and retain the cup for the 4th straight year! You can find the winning results on our Instagram feed and in next week’s Mad Post.

The on-course project continues to move along as scheduled. With most of the work nearly complete on the back nine, the crews will now focus on the front nine. As a result, we will start to move to back nine starts through the week. This change will provide more uninterrupted time for the construction crews. This change will only happen on weekday times. The plan is to continue with first tee starts on weekends and holidays.

Last week we played a game called Just 4 Fun. This was an individual game and the winner determined by the most net 4’s on their scorecard. In case of a tie, the most net 5’s on the scorecard would then determine the winner. As it turned out there was a tie and Sharon Clarke Van den Elzen was the winner with 9 4’s and 3 5’s on her scorecard. Congratulations!

The last of the qualifiers for closest to the pin were PA Irwin-Allen on #3 and Susan Quigley on #14. The longest putt was Yvonne Penning with a length of 10”6”.

The last event on the calendar is our annual Fall Classic on Wednesday, October 8, and it's a great opportunity for every member of the Men's Section to celebrate the season.

This event is our final gathering and a last chance to play with fellow members in a team format. Despite the course interruptions, this day will have plenty of fun ways to enjoy some golf together.

The format is a net scramble, and you can pick your own team or sign up as a single. We're also bringing back the popular Super's Revenge pins to see what wild setups Chad and his team have in store for us! Last year, most of the laughs and post-round banter came from recalling the pins, like the one that was halfway up the hill, middle-left on the 8th green. You won't want to miss a unique and fun chance to play pins like this.

Savoring the Season at Mad River with Celebratory Events and New Fall Wines

As we step into autumn, the evenings have been nothing short of breathtaking with sunsets painting the sky in shades of gold and crimson, and a lingering warmth that makes it feel as though summer refuses to let go. It’s this atmosphere that reminds us why this time of year at the Club is so special.

Based on Member feedback and the popularity of our themed dinners this season, we’re delighted to add one final evening: ”Braising the Bar” on October 9. This night will feature the rich, slow-cooked flavors we all crave in autumn, paired with wines I’ve been carefully selected. Please register online or email Michelle at [email protected]

 While many of us miss our beloved California wines, I’ve been determined to find alternatives that bring just as much character, balance, and pleasure to the glass. These bottles below may not carry a California label, but they shine in their own right. I am excited to share these new additions with you.  Please ask for a sample the next time you are at the Club.

  • Angelo Innocenti Cabernet Sauvignon – La Consulta, Argentina - full-bodied and velvety.
  • Domaine de Boissan “Cou Cou” Syrah, Rhône, France – lively, peppery, vibrant
  • Arnaldo Caprai Montefalco Rosso (Sangiovese), Umbria, Italy – layered, elegant, and food-loving

Notes from the Chef Stephen Sagar

This past weekend at the Divorce Open, I served a tender bacon-wrapped pork loin, stuffed with creamy bocconcini cheese and roasted red peppers. The savoury smokiness of the bacon paired beautifully with the delicate richness of the cheese and the sweetness of the peppers, making for a dish that was both elegant and hearty.

To complement the pork, I served a homemade rustic apple sauce—a classic made new with a touch of creativity. Instead of going the smooth purée route, I simmered the apples slowly for two hours and then gently crushed them with a potato masher. This kept the sauce rustic in texture, a perfect counterbalance to the richness and fattiness of the pork.

The final touch was a drizzle of beurre noisette (brown butter) folded into the apple sauce right before serving. That nutty depth elevated the sauce, adding warmth and complexity to every bite.

MAD READS adds an October session

Monday October 27  4:30 – Isola by Allegra Goodman
Discussion to be led by Cathy Hobart
Isola is a sweeping historical fiction tale based on the real-life Marguerite de La Rocque of 15th-century France. Heir to a fortune, Marguerite is destined for a life of prosperity and gentility. Then she is orphaned, and her guardian—an enigmatic and volatile man—spends her inheritance and insists she accompany him on an expedition to New France. Isolated and afraid, Marguerite befriends her guardian’s servant and the two develop an intense attraction. But when their relationship is discovered, they are brutally punished and abandoned on a small island with no hope for rescue. Once a child of privilege who dressed in gowns and laced pearls in her hair, Marguerite finds herself at the mercy of nature. As the weather turns, blanketing the island in ice, she discovers a faith she’d never before needed.  Isola is the timeless story of a woman fighting for survival.
