We’ve had a terrific stretch of weather in September and look forward to above average temperatures this first week of October.

Our work on the 18th tee is taking a little longer than projected, but they are into the final stages now. Doug Carrick was on sight last week to assess the work and was pleased with the outcome. He marked off the fairway, rough and fescue lines and you will notice seed and sod work this week. There will be additional tree removal on #18 and this work will begin after we close for the season.

The fall is always a great time of year to play golf, especially at Mad River! Usually at this point in the season, the temperatures are very comfortable and of course the scenery is spectacular as the leaves start to change colour. This week we are going to be treated to “summer” like conditions with lots of sunshine and temperatures approaching 30 degrees. As a result, we anticipate that the golf course will remain busy through the Thanksgiving weekend.

Congratulations to Loree and Kristy Henry for winning this year’s four ball match play championship.  The final match was played against Elfie Alexander and Liz Hoffman, a very closely contested match that went into extra holes.  Prizes will be awarded on Tuesday, October 3rd at the ladies closing.  Thanks to all 40 players who participated this year and we hope that you will be back in 2024.

A reminder that partnerships may remain in tact for next year.  Details will be available in the spring.

The final in the Championship flight of the Ladies Singles Match play was epic. With three holes to go Hilarie Woods had to focus all her energy on the end game. She took 16. Took advantage of a stroke on 17 to win the hole and putted out on 18 to tie the hole.  But a tie wasn’t enough, as Lesley Brightling was dormie and she secured the win through excellent play on earlier holes. Clearly, handicaps level the playing field when it comes down to the last putt on the last hole to determine the Champion.

Congratulations to both players for a tournament well played.  Your winnings will be tabulated and added to your accounts soon enough.

But that’s not quite the end of things. The Consolation side of this event remains to be decided with the winner also collecting some of the winnings. Stay tuned for the results of that match which will be reported shortly.

Congratulations to Paul and Charlene Wildridge, this year’s Mixed Club Champions. They both brought their A game to the finals defeating their opponents. They made use of the two strokes given on the front nine and added three straight birdies on holes five through seven. Ouch.  While their opponents tried to mount a comeback on the back nine taking holes ten, twelve and thirteen, it wasn’t enough and the match was conceded on the next hole. A well deserved win by all accounts.

Mad Men’s League

On Wed. Sept. 20th, our 2023 Men’s League concluded. Our Champions were the J Gang who were Captained by Jamie Hugessen. Jaimie was instrumental in rallying his troops with inspiring emails.
Congrats to Captain Kevin McKenzie and his Mad Men for their 2nd place prize money.7 points back after a year long competition is pretty close!

The year long closest to the pin winners competed in the year end shoot out. Congratulations to 1.Mike Fitzhenry, 2. Morgan Rubes and 3. David Brookes who finished 1,2,3 to split the 900 dollar purse. Great shots fellas!

As predicted last year, we did experience some progress in the Mad League format, however feedback from some of our gents, suggest we still need to communicate the standings better. Just like any form of new technology, people are more comfortable with a posted update rather then logging onto a Golf Genius app. Perhaps some training next year on the usage would benefit some. A work in progress despite our increased participation.

HOLE IN ONE

On Friday, Sept 29th, our very own Angelo Breda got a hole in one on   #11 - 119 yds using a 23 degree hybrid. witnessed by Daiva and Joseph Norkus.
This is Angelo's second hole in one at Mad.  In 2017 he also had a hole in one on #16.
What gets better is that Angelo will turn 90 in February. Congratulations Mr. Breda, you’re truly inspiring all of us!

Doug Painter got a on Monday September 11 on hole #7 using a pitching wedge. Witnessed by Jack Ward, Pierre Lemaire and Rob Franklin.  This is Doug's third hole in one, second at Mad River.  No pictures on the day, however, here is a great photo from the recent Ireland trip using same club.
