As I mentioned in earlier Mad Post articles, we’ll be communicating golf course project updates in a variety of ways this summer. The Mad Post, direct member emails, videos, first tee starter, on course signage and on Member Central on the website and app.

I’ve set up a Project Information section at the top of the Member Central page and plan to update it daily once the work begins in July. In the meantime, I’ll update it as necessary to keep you informed about information I hope you’ll find helpful.

There is one important action you can assist us with as we prepare for the transition onto temporary greens on #6 and #17. You may recall, we referred to the temporary greens as “manicured temporary greens” in earlier communications. What do we mean by that? You’ve probably already noticed that Chad has marked off the temporary green locations with green paint. He will begin preparing them with additional care and attention, including lowering the height of cut and ongoing topdressing so they will putt much better than you might expect. As part of these preparations, Chad has marked the areas as “ground under repair” and we’re asking that you not play from them but rather take a “free drop”, so as not to take any divots from the marked off areas.

I am excited to announce that the 2025 Match Play Brackets have officially been released! Thank you to all who entered this year’s competitions. With brackets now posted and available via the website, it's time to begin scheduling your matches. I encourage you to reach out to your fellow competitors early to ensure your match can be completed within the designated timeframe. I have heard some members say that it is the responsibility of the lower handicap player in the match to take the lead on scheduling a time to play. This is not the case, the expectation is that BOTH players take equal responsibility in providing options to ensure the match is completed on time.
It is important to remind members competing in match play of some basic etiquette, and tips to ensure the pace of play is aligned with our expectations. First and foremost, both players should ensure that they are playing with the proper handicaps. The pro shop is always available to assist with preparing a scorecard. At the time of booking, please let the pro shop know that it is a match. This will give them time to prepare the scorecard.

Once you receive the scorecard, you should always double check that the handicap provided is correct. If you feel that a mistake has been made, it is important that it is corrected before the match begins. If it turns out that a player was mistakenly given too many strokes, they could be subject to disqualification. If they were given a lower handicap, there is no penalty, however, the player would have to play at that cap if the error was not resolved before the match started. You can find this in the rule book under 3.2(c).

Once you have your scorecard prepared, you are now ready to head to the first tee. Playing a match, especially for members doing it for the first time, can be a stressful situation. My advice is to RELAX and have FUN! Over the course of 18 holes, there will be ups & downs, on both sides. The nice thing about match play is that if you have a bad hole, you lose it and move to the next. On the flip side, in stroke play competition, a bad hole can often knock you out of contention.

With that in mind, this brings me to the pace of play tip/expectation. If you are clearly losing a hole, and you have fallen behind the group in front of you, please concede and move to the next hole. I find matches fall behind very quickly, the lack of understanding when to concede, and when to keep playing, is a big reason for that.

Speaking of conceding, this becomes a unique part of match play, especially once you reach the putting green. This is where you see some gamesmanship occur. For example, you might concede a two-foot putt early in the match. However, if the match is close, you likely will want the player to hole the putt from a short distance. It is recommended that you never assume anything is “good”. Even if a concession is likely, make sure your opponent verbally tells you “It’s good”. The last thing you want is to pick up a putt and your opponent is watching with their lips sealed. Back to pace of play, matches can slow down once they reach the green. As with any shot in golf or in a match, please be ready to go when it is your turn. Also, if your opponent has two putts to win the hole from inside 6 feet, unless it is severely downhill or a breaking putt, just concede and move to the next hole. Once again, playing in a match is no excuse to play slowly.

In our last Golf Activities meeting, the captains all agreed that matches must keep up the pace of play. When a match does fall behind, this year, be aware that you may be asked to skip a hole. If this happens, one of the golf professionals will inform the competitors that they need to move to the next hole. The hole that they skip would simply be halved. This is a situation that we would all prefer to avoid, so please do your part to play fast.

Next week is the Senior Club Championship Tuesday so please join us! There are three flights you can choose from.

#1. The Championship Flight. You must be 50+ years of age. This is stroke play from the red tees. The low gross score in this flight will be the 2025 Sr. Club Champion and invited to the Champions dinner in October.

#2. Players must be 70+ years of age. This is stroke play from the red tees. In response to the interest expressed last year, we are offering this flight. Those eligible players not wishing to play in the Championship flight hopefully will sign up.

#3. Play your own ball from the red tees and Stableford scoring will be used. This method awards points based on players performance on each hole rather than counting total strokes for the round. Players receive points for their net score. The objective is to accumulate the most points over 18 holes. No pressure and if you do not score any points on a hole, you may pick up.

When you sign up through this week’s invite, you will be given a choice as to which flight you want to play in. To those that have already signed up on GG, please reply to this week’s Pro Shop invite indicating which flight you would like to play in.

New Clinic Added for This Week!,  Zen Golf Weekend, Weekly Clinics

Mastering the Lies – How Grass and Ground Affect Your Shots
Mad River presents a variety of lies that can challenge even the best players — from tight bentgrass to thick fescue and bluegrass roughs.

Understanding how different lies affect your setup, club choice, and shot execution is essential to playing your best golf. I’ll be covering this in this week's clinic and if anyone is interested in exploring this topic in an on-course session, please let me know. Learning how to assess a lie properly and adjust to the turf conditions can mean the difference between getting up and down or struggling to save bogey.

Superfood Salad, Complimentary Flavoured Water and Snacks
Power Up with Our Superfood Salad
Looking for a meal that’s as satisfying as it is nutritious? Our Superfood Salad is a fresh, vibrant option that checks all the boxes—flavor, health, and flexibility.
This powerhouse dish starts with a nutrient-rich base of peppery arugula and crisp broccoli, tossed with protein-packed quinoa and heart-healthy avocado. We add the natural sweetness of dried cranberries, the crunch of walnuts, and the creamy goodness of feta cheese—all brought together with a bright, herbaceous tarragon vinaigrette that perfectly ties the flavors together. Take it to the next level by adding a protein: grilled chicken for a lean, classic addition or shrimp for a light, flavorful twist or trout for an omega-3 boost. Whether you're fueling up post-round or enjoying a clean, satisfying lunch, our Superfood Salad is a delicious way to nourish your body—and treat your taste buds.

Complimentary Flavoured Water
This season we will be offering flavoured water in Cupp’s Corner. There will be two glass jugs containing different flavours such as strawberry-basil, lemon-cucumber, watermelon-lime, and more. These are great for a quick refresh in between 9s.

Notes from the Chef Stephen Sagar

A big thank you to all who attended the themed dinner on Saturday. It was a ton of great fun for me and I am honoured they came enjoyed the evening. The dessert of the evening was a Mocha Chocolate Mousse and is a recipe I learned as a young budding Chef at Barberien’s Steakhouse. I’ve altered the recipe a little bit over the years but when a recipe works well, there is little need to make alterations.
