Legacy Program Update
In 2023 we hosted our first National Championship at Mad River, the Canadian Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. We were the first club to host this event as a stand-alone Championship in the hope it would help Golf Canada grow women’s golf in this important demographic.

As the tournament host there’s an obligation to generate funds to support a worthy cause at the conclusion of the event. We felt strongly that our contribution must have longevity beyond a single donation, and it was the decision of our committee to align with the aspirations of Golf Canada to grow women’s golf. We landed on the idea to promote and develop golf for girls at three local high schools. This idea not only supported our longevity aspiration, but it also aligned with our Club Values to enhance our community through participation and involvement by introducing golf to young girls in our community.

Our ideal scenario was that the program develops into high school girls golf teams where each year, there might be 12-24 girls introduced to the game of golf. If we could achieve this objective, the program would grow the women’s game many years after we’d hosted the Championship.

We have a busy week to finish off the month of June. The week also includes some adjustments to the tee sheet that I wanted to make sure members were aware of. Starting on Friday, June 27th, the club is hosting the Men’s Member Guest. This is a full day event which means the golf course will be closed for the entire day to members not participating in the event. On the bright side, the practice facilities will be available as of 10:00am for anyone that wants to book a lesson or simply work on their game.

The second adjustment to be aware of is next Monday, June 30th. Since Canada Day falls on Tuesday, we have decided to not have a maintenance morning on the Monday the day before. As a result, the tee sheet on Monday will open at 7:00am. Also, since Monday is technically not a holiday, all members are able to reserve times throughout the day, including before 10:00am. There will be no walk-on times on this day so please reserve in advance.

It was a busy week for the Ladies at Mad River!

The winners of last Tuesday’s game were Val Dyer, Yvonne Penning and Heather Johnston. They posted a team score of 158 and winning by 2 strokes. Closest to the Pin winners were Karen Franklin and Yvonne Penning and the Longest Putt was made by Jane Poulsen sinking from 19’4”! An honourable mention to Lesley Brightling for an outstanding putt from a distance of 52’3” made from the fringe on the 18th green.

Guiness Update and a Story
We have a quick update regarding a topic that's been buzzing around the clubhouse. We know many of you are excited about the prospect of having a Guinness tap at the Club, and we absolutely share that enthusiasm for bringing that perfect, creamy pint to our Members. After careful review, we've decided not to proceed with the Guinness draught system installation this year.

This decision comes down to the specialized equipment and specific gas requirements that Guinness taps need. Unlike a standard beer tap that uses only CO2, Guinness requires a specific nitrogen/CO2 gas blend and a specialized stout faucet to create that iconic cascade and creamy head. Installing and maintaining this system correctly involves a higher initial cost for the unique equipment and ongoing expenses for the specialized gas and more frequent, precise line cleaning.

While these factors mean it's not feasible for us right now, please know that we are still very keen on the idea! We will continue to explore options and potentially budget for a Guinness tap in the future. Our goal is to bring the best experiences to our members when we can do so responsibly and sustainably. Thank you for your understanding and in the interim, we do offer both Guiness 0.0% and the real deal in a can.

Notes from the Chef Stephen Sagar

This week I tried out a new recipe to a positive reception: The Classic PB Cookie. Creamy, crumbly and popular.  If you have a severe allergy to peanut butter, please let me know and I will be sure that is keeps a distance.

Some of you may not be aware that peanut butter was invented by a crafty Canadian. It's one of those odd trivial pieces of information that I just have to . . .  spread.
