Submitted by Gary Ward, General Manager & C.O.O.

I would like to begin by thanking all the department Managers at Mad River this summer for their efforts towards delivering another successful season. In particular, Chad, Sandy, Trish, Michelle and Carl put in a tremendous amount of time and energy ensuring we put our best foot forward each day.

A reminder that the club and cart storage building will be closing this Sunday, October 31st. Please make sure you have picked up your clubs as we will not be storing them over the winter.

For our members with electronic power kaddies in storage, we ask that you take your battery and charger home for the season. Since the building will not be heated over the winter months, we do not want to risk any damage to your battery or charger with the extreme temperatures.

Thank you,

Hello Everyone,

Where did our season go? Only 3 days left at Mad for this year!

I thought you might enjoy hearing Jack Nicklaus’ reply to a question posed by Lorne Rubinstein in an interview.

LR: “Why is it that so many people are addicted to something so humiliating and frustrating for so many people all the time? The ball never goes where it’s supposed to go.”

JN: “A never-ending pursuit of an unattainable goal is what it really is. Nobody has ever mastered the game. Almost all athletes in all other sports love to play golf because it’s difficult. It challenges them at whatever level they play. That’s why I enjoyed it, because no matter how good I got, I could always be better.”

So folks, see you out there next year in our quest to be better while enjoying Mad River!

We hope you winter well, and we hope Mad River does too!

Your Ladies Captain,
Susan Quigley, [email protected]

The golf season is about to end and with it my term as your Men’s Captain.  It has been a very challenging time for everyone these past two years, very difficult to make changes that I had planned for the men’s section due to Covid, but I trust that we are headed in the right direction and by next season the Club will be back to normal.

I am extremely honoured to have been asked to assume the role of your 2022-23 Men’s Club Captain. We thank Pierre for his tenure during the past two years, which we all know has been a very unique and unprecedented time in our world.

Although my new role doesn’t officially commence until next spring, I wanted to introduce myself, and send a request out to the Men that make up our membership.

Stu Hamilton (Photo: submitted - Stu Hamilton)

by Brent Long
There is so much that could be written about Stu Hamilton’s golf career that it’s hard to know where to start. After scribbling in a notebook for 90-minutes during a telephone interview with the 76-year-old, my hand ached. That doesn’t happen too often these days, but Stu’s story is a fascinating look at life, competitive golf, family, and the choices he faced each step of the way. It’s easy to write a story about the wins and losses, but what they meant back then and how he reflects on them today are the intriguing part of the story that rarely gets delved into in today’s quick-hit Social Media world. Stu and I have been back and forth many times exchanging questions and answers since the initial interview. I could write an entire chapter in a book about his provincial, national, and international golfing exploits, but we are going to stick to the highlights and his insights about the journey for this issue of Past and Present. It has been a real treat to write this one – sit back with a cup of coffee and I hope you enjoy the read. As they say – live and learn!
