We Will Get Past This

On behalf of all the staff at Mad River I hope you and your families are doing well during this crisis. The staff at the club are in good health and as anxious as you are to get the season started!

I will review our current situation later in the message, but I thought it important to start with a positive message that we will get through this pandemic! We will get back out on the golf course! And we will get back to this game we are all missing so much!

In researching bulletins provided by golf clubs during emergency situations, some dating back to World War II, I found some interesting messages. These messages provided members information on conditions under which the course would open during or once the crisis had passed.

Golf Course Update April 22/2020

This winter has been a roller coaster with similar weather patterns to the winter of 2019. We experienced quite a few freeze/ thaw cycles, unfortunately at no point during the warm stretch in late December and early January did the golf course completely bare off. There was some ice at the surface on some greens for the majority of the winter.

We had some warm days in March which decreased our snowpack significantly, this allowed us to remove the remaining snow and melt the ice with the help of black sunflower seeds. The black colour of the seeds attracts the sun and essentially melts holes in the ice to allow oxygen to the grass plants.

SOCIAL DISTANCING AT MAD RIVER

Social, or physical distancing, starts in the parking lot at Mad River come opening day.
The DeLorenzi’s and the Henry’s are eager for the golf season to start and are already practicing their social distancing moves.

From the moment you exit your car at the Club, please remember that social distancing is the law and Mad River and its members must abide for all 18 holes.

When the Club opens we want to REMAIN OPEN and social distancing is just one of the ways Members can help to ensure that the Club can not only stay open, but stay safe.

The Best and Worst of Times

Welcome to the 2020 golf season; at least that is how I would usually start a message at this time of year. As we now know, the 2020 golf season will not be what we were wishing or planning for, however, this is not the first time Mad River has faced adversity and if history dictates, nor will it be the last.

I hope you have all had a great winter and are taking advantage of this time together with your loved ones.

With all the uncertainty surrounding us, I wanted to ensure you that I am on top of best practices within my area of the business. Yesterday, I was on a call with a list of the top teachers from around our area from clubs such as Toronto Golf, Mississauga, Toronto Ladies, St. George’s, and Lambton to name a few. We were discussing ways to keep members actively engaged in learning moving into this irregular golf season. Ideas were abundant but only time will tell.

With that said, I have recently completed the construction (or about 98% complete) of a putting studio here at home and have been actively creating content to help you with your putting and chipping. I will also be adding creative ideas for parents to work on with their junior golfers at home to help fill the hours of the day.

Kristy and Dean Henry are the proud parents of a baby boy, Mac Braden Henry, born February 21st
Big sister, Grace can’t wait to teach Mac everything she knows!

Jamie & Elizabeth Hugessen
Jaime and Elizabeth have been members at Devil's Glen for 17 years and finally bought a ski chalet on property last fall. “It’s been great to spend more time in the area and we are looking forward to joining the Mad River community during the off ski season”. Jaime has spent much of his career in the Group Insurance industry, most recently with Empire Life. Elizabeth has enjoyed a career in corporate event management. The Hugessen's have 3 sons, Richard (24 a programmer at WealthSimple), Jeffrey (21, 3rd year Commerce at Queens) and Michael (19, 1st year Commerce at Dalhousie).
